The presence of any 3 of the following 5 risk factors constitutes a diagnosis of MetS

Elevated blood pressure

Systolic ≥ 130 mmHg and/or diastolic ≥ 85 mmHg

[or antihypertensive drug treatment]

Elevated triglycerides

≥ 150 mg/dl

[or drug treatment for elevated triglycerides]

Reduced HDL-cholesterol

Males: < 40 mg/dl, females: < 50 mg/dl

[or drug treatment for reduced HDL-cholesterol]

Elevated blood glucose

≥ 100 mg/dl (fasting) or ≥ 144 mg/dl (non-fasting)*

[or drug treatment for elevated glucose/type 2 diabetes mellitus]

Elevated waist circumference

Population-/country-specific, according to IDF recommendation for people with European origin: males ≥ 94 cm, females ≥ 80 cm
